תְּרַסch., Af. אַתְרֵיס, Pa. תָּרֵיס same, 1) to shield. Targ. Job 41:7 מַתְרִיסִין Var. ed. Lag. (ed. תְּרֵיסִין noun). 2) to fight, challenge, oppose. Y.Ab. Zar. II, 41b top ולא על יאות … מְתָרֵס לקיבליה but R. Ḥ. opposed him improperly; Y.Dem.III, 23c bot. ולא עאל יאות … מַתְרִיס לקבל (corr. acc.). Y.Gitt.III, 44d לא דריש לקיש מַתְרִיס לקבלוכ׳ not that R. L. opposed R. J. because they differed in theory, but Tam.32a מה דין אַתְרִיסְתּוּן לקבלי (Rashi אִיתְרִ׳ Ithpe.) why, now, did you oppose me? 3) to put on armor. Y.Kidd.III, 63d והוה … מתרס כליווכ׳ and R. H. put his armor on against (took up a debate with) Ithpe. אִיתְרִיס same, to oppose. B. Bath. 111a השתא איכו נח … אִיתְרִיסַת לקבלי Ms. M. (ed. השתא כי) now if R. H. were dead, you might have opposed me (by referring to his authority).
